Death Notice of Fred Hopkins

Frederick Oren Hopkins, of Elmwood, passed away suddenly at his farm doing what he loved to do, caring for his beloved dairy herd, on Sunday, October 19th, 2025 in his 64th year. Beloved husband of Marian (nee Walton). Proud father of Eric Hopkins and his wife Courtney, Christopher Hopkins and his wife Kali, and Leanne and her husband Luke Saare. Cherished Poppa of Macie, Lilah, Beckham, Nash, Navy, and Cooper. Dear brother of Cheryl and Ken Nelson, Susan Spielmacher, and Darryl and Kim Hopkins. Son-in-law of Marilyn Walton and brother-in-law of David Walton and Lisa Steckly, and Susan and Stephen Schenk. Fred will be missed by his aunts, his nieces and nephews, many cousins, friends and the farming community. Predeceased by his parents Oren and Deanna Hopkins, and his father-in-law Don Walton.

Fred’s lifelong love of farming and country living began on a farm on the Mulock Road. As a teenager Fred worked at Walton Sales Arena. This helped fuel his passion for clipping, fitting and showing cattle which took him from local shows to the Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo. This job also brought Fred the love of his life, Marian. They took over the dairy herd in 1988 and nurtured it into the successful herd it is today all while raising three children.

Fred had a competitive nature and that was clear whether in the cattle showring, arena or on the ball field. He volunteered his time with local sports teams and clubs by coaching or helping organize.

Fred was a mentor to many. He loved to share his knowledge and thoughts with anyone who had the time to spend. These conversations would be about farming, sports or the latest happenings in the world.

Most of all, Fred loved time spent with his family and friends catching up on their lives. He was a proud father and Poppa.

Visitation will be held at the McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home, Durham on Sunday, October 26th from 1 – 4 and 6 – 9 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Fred’s life will be held at the Durham Community Centre, 451 Saddler Street West, Durham on Monday, October 27th at 2 pm. Interment at Durham Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Owen Sound Hospital Foundation, West Grey Rampage Lacrosse or Saugeen Valley Steelheads Minor Hockey would be appreciated.
