Death Notice of Shirley Peebles

Shirley Eileen Peebles (nee Aberdein), of RR#1 Elmwood, passed away at Brightshores Health System, Owen Sound on Sunday, November 1st, 2026 in her 90th year.

Beloved wife of the late Doug Peebles.  Loving mother of Terry Peebles (Benita), Patty Peebles (Linda), and Cheryl (Jerry) Silen.  Cherished grandmother of David, Andrew (Kylee), Rose, Jessica (Randy), Conner, and Katie.  Great-grandmother of Aubree, and Dawson.  Dear sister-in-law of Velma Aberdein, and Elaine Coleman. Predeceased by her parents Alex Aberdein and Jessie Holley, her siblings Dave (Heather) Aberdein, Erma (Jim) Stephenson, Bill (Janet) Aberdein, Donelda (Bryan) Wellwood, and Jake Aberdein, her sister-in-law Kathleen Thomas, her brother-in-law Bert Thomas, and her dear friend Bruce Reid.  She is also survived by many nephews and their families.

Shirley grew up in the Flesherton area in a big family and loved her time there. When she married Doug, they moved north to pursue his job with Ontario Hydro making stops in Sturgeon Falls, Lower Sturgeon, Timmins and finally Thessalon where they lived for 36 years and raised their 3 children.  She loved to curl, play Bingo (she was the driver for the pack) and of course play cards.  She worked as a teacher, at a bank and finally settling into a career in Social Work which was her calling. In her 40s she went back to Humber College and earned her Diploma and we were all so proud of her accomplishment.  Her reputation grew and as a result she was invited to be part of the OMERS Provincial Board for many years. In 1998 Shirley and Doug retired and moved back to their roots near Durham where she thoroughly enjoyed spending more time with her family.  After Doug passed on, she met Bruce and they spent many years travelling and watching baseball together.  She was a fighter, overcoming many health issues with grace and a smile on her face. She was a fiercely loyal friend who always stepped in where she could help, and she valued her family above all else.

Cremation has taken place.  Visitation will be held at the McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home, Durham on Friday, November 6th from 7 – 9 p.m.  A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held at the Funeral Home on Saturday, November 7th at 2 p.m.  Private interment of cremated remains at Flesherton Cemetery Columbarium will take place at a later date.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Cancer Research Society, Crawford United Church or Knox United Church would be appreciated by the family.
