After a life well lived, Rodger died peacefully at home on June 30th, where he had been receiving palliative care for cancer. He will be greatly missed by his wife Elizabeth, his son Gordon (Mary Brubacher) of Regina, daughter Susan O'Connor (Gerald)of Eganville and daughter Patricia Hines (Stephen Jeffrey) of Beaconsfield, England and by his stepsons David McVey (Heather Perkins McVey), Peter McVey (Sheree Conlan) , Andrew McVey (Anne) and Geoffrey McVey (Jennifer Coy). Also survived by brothers Colin Hines (Bernice) and Robert, and fifteen grandchildren/step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Predeceased by former wives Jeane and Wanda , brothers Grant and Howard and by step-son John McVey.
Rodger served in the RCAF during WW II following which he entered medical school at the University of Toronto graduating with the veterans' class of 1950. He practiced family medicine in Oakville for 25 years, and then joined the newly formed Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto where he served until retirement. He brought his interest in counselling to this role and continued counselling until he was 80. In retirement he enjoyed country life at "Ashbourne Woods" near Durham, Ontario together with his wife Elizabeth, his dogs and horses. For many years he and one of successive Bouviers were regular visitors with the St John Therapy Dog Program at Rockwood Terrace in Durham. The family received great support from the South West CCAC, especially the dedicated nursing and PSW teams who made it possible to care for Rodger at home.

The family will receive visitors at home on Saturday July 5th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM where visitors will be encouraged to bring their stories and help celebrate his life. Cremation has taken place and there will be no formal funeral.

Those who wish may make donations in Rodger's memory to a charity of their choice, remembering his interest in the environment, helping those less fortunate, and in animal welfare. Arrangements entrusted to the McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home, Durham 519-3
